Lindsey Nelson Wins Second Pac-10 Player Of The Week Award
April 24, 2006
USC sophomore women's tennis player Lindsey Nelson anchored the No. 3-ranked Women of Troy through a winning week against crosstown rival UCLA with back-to-back singles and doubles victories over the Bruins. In doing so, Nelson also earned herself a second Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for the 2006 season.
Lindsey Nelson faced the same UCLA opponent twice in a week and posted upset wins in both No. 1 singles matches. Nelson -- ranked #52 in the ITA national poll -- first posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over UCLA's #20 Laura Gordon on Tuesday (April 18), and then beat her again in a three-set match on Friday (April 21) 7-6 (4), 3-6, (10-5). Nelson was the only Trojan to post back-to-back wins over her UCLA opponent. Nelson also teamed up with Luana Magnani to help secure the doubles point for USC in both matches with two wins over UCLA's Lumpkin/McGoodwin at the No. 2 doubles slot.
Nelson and the Trojans finished the regular season with a 17-3 overall record and 7-1 in Pac-10 play. She now joins the Women of Troy in the Pac-10 Championships, held April 27-30 in Ojai, Calif.
