Olson and the Huskies Second at Pac-10 Championship
April 24, 2006
Palm Desert, Calif. - The 30th-ranked Washington men's golf team shot 3-under 352 in both the first and second rounds at the 47th Pac-10 Championship, placing the Huskies in second place at 6-under 704. UCLA is in first at 13-under 697. Arizona and Oregon were still out on the course when play was called due to darkness, thus all second round scores in this release are unofficial.
Defending Pac-10 individual champion Erik Olson led the Husky charge, shooting 4-under 67 in the first round and 1-under 70 in the second. His combined score of 5-under 137 is two strokes behind leader Daniel Im of UCLA as of the stoppage of play.
Though Olson's two-round total leads the Huskies, the best single rounds of the day were turned in by two of his Husky teammates, Alex Prugh and James Lepp, who both shot field-leading rounds of 6-under 65. Prugh's first-round 65 established a new career best and gave him the individual lead after round one. The junior shot 3-over 74 in the second round and is tied for fourth with a two-round total of 3-under 139. Lepp's 65 came in the second round and established a new season best. The defending NCAA Champion carded a 5-over 76 in round one for a composite score of 1-under 141, good for sixth place.
'It was a great day,' said Washington head coach Matt Thurmond. 'If you're going to win tournaments like this, you need a couple of special performances, and we had that from James and Alex. And Erik was rock solid all day.
'For Erik, there was a lot of pressure. He's the defending Pac-10 champion, so to come in and play the way he did today was really admirable. As far as the other two guys, when James gets going, he's going downhill and there's nothing stopping him. And Alex got off to a really hot start. He was hitting the ball within 15 feet of the pin all day.'
In fourth position for the Huskies is sophomore Zach Bixler, who shot rounds of 69 and 74, respectively, the finish the day in 13th at 1-over 143. Joe Panzeri rebounded from a 75 in the morning round to shoot 69 in the afternoon, and is currently 16th at 2-over 144. Rounding out the Husky lineup was Sterling Clark, who carded matching 76s in the first two rounds to place 48th as of the stoppage of play.
The third round of the 2006 Pac-10 Championship begins tomorrow morning, following the conclusion of the second round at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring of the round is available at golfstat.com.
