April 24, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA juniors Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel have been named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Players of the Week for Apr. 17 - 23, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
On Friday, Gruendler and Kohlloeffel set a UCLA record, posting their 20th-consective win together. The duo, who are the nation's second-ranked doubles team, fought off four match points in their 9-8 (6) victory over USC's 32nd-ranked Jamil Al-Agba and Dejan Cvetkovic. The win completed Gruendler and Kohlloeffel's undefeated regular season, as the pair own a 20-0 record in 2006 and a 25-2 all-time record. UCLA's previous record for consecutive doubles victories was 19, set by Patrick Galbraith and Brain Garrow in 1989.
This marks Gruendler and Kohlloeffel's first Pac-10 Players of the Week honor as a doubles team and UCLA's third weekly honor all-time. The tandem are the first in the Conference to be named Players of the Week as a doubles team. Kohlloeffel has earned two Player of the Week awards this season for his performance on the singles court.
