April 24, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC sophomore Lindsey Nelson has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Apr. 17 - 23, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Nelson, from Villa Park, Calif., faced the same UCLA opponent twice in one week and posted upset wins in both No. 1 singles matches to help the Women of Troy twice defeat their crosstown rival Bruins. Nelson, ranked No. 52 in the nation, first posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over UCLA's No. 20 Laura Gordon on Tuesday, then beat her in a three-set match, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 10-5, on Friday. Nelson was the only USC player to post back-to-back wins over UCLA. On the doubles court, Nelson teamed up with Luana Magnani to help secure the doubles point for USC in both matches, grabbing two wins over UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin and Alex McGoodwin at the No. 2 doubles position.
This is Nelson's second Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and the fourth weekly honor all-time for USC.
