April 25, 2006

The second-ranked UCLA women's golf team opened an eight-shot lead entering the final round of the 20th Pac-10 Women's Golf Championship at Oro Valley Country Club in the Tucson area.

The Bruins posted a one-under par 287 Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 578 (+2). They lead third-ranked Arizona State (586) by eight strokes and third-place Cal (594) by 16 shots. USC was fourth at 595 (+19) and Oregon State was fifth at 605 (+29).

'I was really pleased with the girls and how they stayed patient today,' said UCLA Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. 'I was pleased with our poise during the whole round.'

UCLA sophomore Amie Cochran took the second round lead with a 68 (-4) on Tuesday. Her 36-hole total of 141 was three-under par and led Washington's Paige Mackenzie by a stroke. Freshman Tiffany Joh was tied for third, two strokes back at 143 (-1) after signing for an even par 72. Freshman Jane Park was tied for 10th at 147 (+3) after posting a 73 and senior Susie Mathews was tied for 13th at 149 (+5) after carding a 76 (+4). Freshman Ryann O'Toole improved four shots from Monday's first round, carding a 74 and was tied for 22nd at 152 (+8).

'It went really well today,' said Cochran. 'The conditions were a little tougher as the wind picked up. The course is in great shape. The greens are true just like the greens we have on campus.

'For me tomorrow, I've just got to play one shot at a time and play in the moment,' Cochran continued. I just have to hit each shot to the best of my capability.'

The tournament concludes on Wednesday.
