April 25, 2006
LOS ANGELES - Erik Johnson's bloop RBI single in the ninth provided the winning run Tuesday as the Loyola Marymount Lions defeated the USC Trojans, 6-5, in non conference action at Dedeaux Field.
Loyola Marymount improved to 18-27 on the season while USC fell to 23-20 overall.
LMU scored three times in the second off starter Shawn Olsen. Kyle Mura hit an RBI single while Eric Farris hit a two-run single to center for the 3-0 lead. USC first baseman Lucas Duda then hit a two-run homer in the second and right fielder Cyle Hankerd hit a solo shot in the third to tie the game at three apiece.
Olsen had his longest stint of the season for the Trojans, lasting seven innings and striking out seven without allowing a walk. After a leadoff single to Johnson in the third, Olsen did not allow a hit for the final five innings of his appearance.
The Lions scored twice in the eighth, but the Trojans tied the game in the bottom half on an RBI groundout by Daniel Perales and a wild pitch thrown by Lee Roberts (2-0) to plate Baron Frost from third.
Anthony Soto hit an infield one-out single in the LMU ninth, moved to second on a wild pitch by Paul Koss (0-5) and advanced to third on a single by Farris. Miller walked to load the bases before Johnson's base hit.
USC travels to Washington State this weekend for a Pac-10 Conference series, Friday-Sunday (April 28-30). Friday's game starts at 6 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Saturday and noon game time for Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com. The Trojans are currently in second place in the Pac-10, 1.5 games back of leader Oregon State.
