Mackenzie Second at Pac-10s Headed Into Final Round

April 25, 2006

Oro Valley, Ariz. - Washington senior Paige Mackenzie shot 1-under 71 in the second round of the 2006 Pac-10 Women's Golf Championship, matching her first round effort and placing her second at 2-under 142 headed into Wednesday's final round. The only golfer to finish each of the first two rounds under par, Mackenzie trails Amie Cochran of UCLA by one stroke.

The 27th ranked Huskies shot 12-over 300 as a team, a round that moved them up to sixth position at 32-over 608 headed into the final round. UCLA leads the field at 2-over 578 after shooting 1-under 287 in round two.

Mackenzie entered the second round in third place and was 1-over through 15 before recording birdies on two of her last three holes. The two-time All-American, who started the round on the 10th tee, bogeyed the par-4 18th and fifth holes while collecting birdies on the par-3 fourth and the par-4 seventh and ninth holes. She put herself into the red on the final hole for the second straight day, as she birdied the ninth hole going into the clubhouse on Monday as well.

'Paige is playing a really solid game right now,' said Washington head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'She's actually had some difficulty with the holes that she normally plays the best, which are the par-5s. So it wouldn't surprise me if she came out tomorrow and shot 67 or 68. She's playing that well. I expect her to have a great day tomorrow.

'The rounds yesterday and today are really just about position. And she's in position. We will tee off first tomorrow, so she will have a chance to go out there and post a number and let (her competitors) try to beat it.'

Junior Amber Prange carded the Huskies' second-best round of the day, a 3-over 75 that placed her 22nd at 8-over 152. Courtney McCracken's 6-over 78 put her in 29th position at 10-over 44. Sung Ea Lee bounced back with a 4-over 76 in round two, giving her a two-round total of 160 and placing her 41st. Kim Shin carded an 83 and is 50th at 176.

The third round of the 2006 Pac-10 Championship begins tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. Live scoring of the event is available at
