No. 11 Cal Climbs to 3rd After Round 2 of Pac-10 Championships

April 25, 2006

ORO VALLEY, Ariz. - No. 11 California jumped one spot to third place Tuesday after the second round of the Pac-10 Championships at Oro Valley Country Club. The Golden Bears boast a two-day score of 18-over 594 after recording a 10-over 298 today.

'We played solid,' said Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel, who looks to direct her team to its fifth consecutive top-five conference finish. 'We let a couple of shots go that could have saved the back nine. We were sloppier than normal. All in all, we are under 300, and we will try to improve on that tomorrow.'

No. 2 UCLA, which started the day in second place four shots behind No. 3 Arizona State, is now in first by eight shots at 578. The Bruins fired a one-under 287 for the low score of the second round. The Sun Devils dropped to second at 586 after finishing the day at 299 despite being at even par through the front nine.

Cal was at three-over on the front nine and was performing well until losing four shots on the final hole. Still, the Bears tied Oregon State for the second-best round today. No. 6 USC is in fourth at 595, and the Beavers, which were the 10th seed in the tournament, are fifth at 605. Five shots separate places five through eight.

UCLA's Amie Cochran sits atop the leader board at three-under 141 following a four-under second-round showing, which included five birdies. Washington's Paige Mackenzie is second at 142, and three golfers are tied for third at 143.

Seniors Sofie Andersson and Sophia Sheridan lead Cal in a tie for seventh at 145. Andersson carded a one-under 71 today, with birdies on the par 5, second hole and the par 4, 16th. Her only bogey was her second in as many days on the par 4, 18th hole. Sheridan scattered three birdies and three bogeys for an even-par 72.

Cal junior Mika Takayama dropped from eighth to a tie for 16th (150) following a score of 78. Freshman Allison Goodman took two shots off her first-day score of 79 to move into a tie for 34th (156). Freshman Shannon Yocum is tied for 45th (162).

The 20th-annual Pac-10 Championships conclude Wednesday, with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. PT. Cal looks to improve upon last year's fifth-place conference finish.
