Kaes Van't Hof Wins First-Round Match For USC Men In At Pac-10 Championships

April 27, 2006

The USC men's and women's tennis teams began their runs at the Pac-10 singles titles on Thursday in Ojai, Calif., with two members of the No. 2-ranked Women of Troy remaining in the race for the women's Pac-10 crown and Kaes Van't Hof earning a hard-fought trip to the second round in the men's singles action. Freshman Amanda Fink and sophomore Lindsey Nelson both posted a pair of wins to move on to the tournament quarterfinals. Quarterfinal singles competition take place on Friday in Ojai, along with the start of doubles play for all.

The USC men were not as successful on Day One, as only Van't Hof was able to get out of the first round. Van't Hof had an all-out battle against UCLA's Chris Surapol to open Thursday's action, and the Trojan reigned victorious with a 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5) win. No other Trojans were able to notch wins in their opening matches in either the tournament or the invitational competitions.

On the women's side of the game, #10 Amanda Fink faced UCLA's Tracy Lin and posted a big comeback performance against her Bruin opponent for a 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 win. Fink then moved to a second-round match against Stanford's Celia Durkin and made that one a two-setter with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 decision that pushed Fink into her first Pac-10 quarterfinal appearance.

USC's #26-ranked Nelson posted her second win over Oregon's #45 Dominika Dieskova in a 6-1, 6-1 victory that put her up against California's Stephanie Kusano in the second round. Nelson powered through that match as well, notching a 6-4, 6-1 victory to stamp her ticket to the Pac-10 quarterfinal round along with Fink.

Junior Judy DeVera won her Pac-10 Invitational first-round match to progress in the invitational bracket, but fell 6-3, 6-4 to UCLA's Ashley Joelson.
