No. 23 Men's Tennis Completes First Day at Pac-10 Championships

OJAI, Calif. - Fourth-ranked senior Conor Niland advanced to the third round of the singles main draw, as the No. 23 California men's tennis team started off play at the 2006 Pac-10 Championships on Thursday in Ojai, Calif.
In the singles main draw on Thursday, Niland defeated USC's Dejan Cvetkovic in the first round, 6-1, 6-1 and turned around to easily beat UCLA's Aaron Yovan, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round.
Sophomore Ken Nakahara defeated Oregon's Eric Pickard in the first round, 6-3, 6-3. However, Nakahara fell to Washington's Alex Slovic in two sets, 6-1, 6-2 during the second round of play Thursday afternoon.
In the singles invite bracket, senior Dean Wallace defeated Stanford's Chris Rasmussen, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to Friday's second round. Junior John Pettit did not fair as well, falling to Arizona's Nathan Cochrane, 0-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The Bears will continue play tomorrow in Ojai, Calif. Cal with the opening round of doubles tomorrow and the third round of singles. The matches are being held at Libbey Park.
