Three Cardinal Players Advance to the Quarterfinals in Pursuit of the Pac-10 Singles Championship

Ojai, Calif. - The Cardinal kicked off competition at the 2006 Pac-10 Championships today with singles play. Four of the Cardinal's five entrants in the Pac-10 Championship posted a first round victory and Alice Barnes, Theresa Logar and Anne Yelsey advanced to the quarterfinals with a win in their second match of the day. In the Pac-10 Invitational, Jessica Nguyen posted a win in the Round of 16 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
In the first round of competition for the Pac-10 Championship, fourth-ranked Barnes, 36th-ranked Celia Durkin, sixth-ranked Logar and 12th-ranked Yelsey swept through in straight sets to earn a spot in the Round of 16. In their second match of the day, all three of the Cardinal's top-10 players came out with their second win of the day, all in straight sets. Barnes and Yelsey both bested a pair of ranked opponents and Logar added one win over a ranked foe.
In the quarterfinals tomorrow, Barnes will play 25th-ranked Laura Gordon of UCLA, Logar will take on 26th-ranked Lindsey Nelson of USC and Yelsey will challenge eighth-ranked Suzi Fodor of Cal.
In the Pac-10 Invitational, 76th-ranked Nguyen earned a bye in the first round before posting a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the round of 16. She will take on UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin tomorrow morning. Lejla Hodzic notched a straight-set win in the opening round before dropping out in the second round in a tough battle, that came down to a tiebreak in the third set, which Cal's Claire Ilcinkas captured, 10-8.
Doubles play will begin tomorrow, and singles action will continue at 11:30 a.m. with the quarterfinals. The nation's top-ranked tandem of Barnes and Burdette earned a first-round bye, but will face UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin and Alex McGoodwin on Friday afternoon. Hodzic and Nguyen will also compete for the Pac-10 title, with a 10:15 a.m. match-up against Arizona State's Sabrina Capannoloand Jessica Leitch. In the Invitational draw, Deason and Kao will pair up. A first-round bye sets the pair up to face Ashley Joelsonand Tracy Linin the quarterfinals tomorrow afternoon, while Leck and Megan Doheny will start the day by challenging Washington's Tara Simpsonand Stephanie Svanfeldt at 9 a.m.
