Bears Advance at Pac-10 Championships

Ojai, Calif. - The ninth-ranked California women's tennis team wrapped up another successful day Friday on day two of the 2006 Pac-10 Championships, which are being held at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club in Ojai, Calif. Cal will advance three singles players and two doubles teams to tomorrow's semifinals competition as play continues through the weekend. The outcome of Sunday's competition will determine the league's singles and doubles champions.

In singles play the Bears have three players advancing the to the semifinals tomorrow, including Suzi Fodor, who will play in the singles championships semifinals, while Marion Ravelojaona and Claire Ilcinkas advance to the invitational semifinals. Cal also has two doubles teams advancing, including Fodor and Suzi Babos who will compete in the championships semifinals, while Ilcinkas and Ravelojaona will team up in the invitational semis.

The day started off with doubles play, as Bojana Bobusic and Stephanie Kusano fell to USC's Dianne Matias and Carine VerMeulen, 8-3, in the doubles main draw round of 16. Suzi Fodor and Suzi Babos, who enter doubles play with a No. 2 seed, outlasted Judy DeVera and Amanda Fink of USC, 8-4. The duo then went on to defeat Lejla Hodzic and Jessica Nguyen of Stanford, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. Babos and Fodor are 17-7 overall this season as a doubles team.

In other doubles action, Jessica Shu teamed up with Cristina Visico to defeat Oregon's Monica Hoz de Vila and Jamie Marshall, 8-6, in the doubles invitational round of 16, and then fell in the quarterfinals to Oregon's Monica Hoz de Vila and Jamie Marshall, 8-6. Claire Ilcinkas and Marion Ravelojaona outlasted Tara Simpson and Stephanie Svanfeldt of Washington, 8-5, in the invitational quarterfinals.

In singles championship action, Suzi Fodor downed Stanford's Anne Yelsey, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, while Suzi Babos was eliminated by USC's Amanda Fink, after falling, 6-3, 7-5.

Ravelojaona defeated UCLA's Anna Victoria Lind, 7-5, 6-4, in the singles invitational quarterfinals, while teammate Ilcinkas also picked up a win, downing Arizona State's Jessica Leitch, 6-1, 6-1. Bojana Bobusic fell to UCLA's Ashley Joelson 6-4, 6-3.

The Bears continue at the Pac-10 Championships Saturday, as singles action kicks off at 11 a.m., followed by doubles at 3:30 p.m. (PST).
