California Track and Field Opens at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa - The California track and field team braved through wind, rain and cold weather to opened competition at the 97th annual Drake Relays on Friday in Des Moines, Iowa.

A bright spot for the Bears on the cloudy day was the 4 x 100m women's relay team of senior Osarhiemen Omwanghe, senior Tiffany Johnson, sophomore Chanda Picott and senior Antonette Carter whom reached tomorrow's finals with their prelim time of 45.92 set today.

The 4 x 400m women's relay team of freshman Francesca Weems, sophomore Alysia Johnson, freshman Mackenzie Pierce and sophomore Brook Turner were leading the competition, but during the third leg, Pierce was tripped giving way to their disappointing finish at 3:46.31.

Sophomore Ed Wright won the high jump competition with his mark of 6-08.75 (2.05m). Sophomore Emille Strot finished fifth in the discus with her throw of 169-11 (51.79m). Senior Paul Teinert finished fourth in the javelin with his mark of 210-04 (64.11m).

California will return to the track tomorrow at the 97th annual Drake Relays, as the Bears are favored in the women's sprint medley. The meet is being held at Drake Stadium and will wrap up tomorrow.
