No. 53 Slovic Falls In Pac-10 Quarterfinal

Ojai, Calif. - Junior Alex Slovic was defeated 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(8) by James Wan in a three set match that lasted just over four hours and fifteen minutes in the tournament's quarterfinal round during the second day of competition at the 2006 Pac-10 Individual Championships at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif.

In the invitational singles tournament, David Chu and Klaus Jank were defeated in the quarterfinals ending singles play for the Huskies. Washington's top seeded doubles teams were routed in the first round of the tournament while two pairs of Dawgs advanced to the semifinals of the invitational doubles bracket.

After having just finished a heated doubles match, Slovic went on the play the longest singles match of the season against Stanford's James Wan in the tournament's quarterfinal round. Wan was able to regain his composure and rally to defeat Washington's top singles player after dropping the first set 5-7. Carrying the momentum over from the second set, Wan put the junior away 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(8) in a 10-8 third set tiebreaker victory.

Washington's hopes for a Pac-10 singles title were abruptly ended, as David Chu and Klaus Jank were defeated in the Invitational Tournament's quarterfinals. Chu lost to Cal's Dean Wallace 7-5, 6-1 after having captured a place in the invitational tournament doubles' semifinal round with teammate Andy Gerst. Klaus Jank fell to Phil Kao of Stanford 6-2, 7-5.

Daniel Chu and Alex Slovic were bounced out of the Pac-10 doubles tournament by John Petit and Daniel Sebescan 8-5 in the first round of play. Chu and Slovic were finalists in the 2005 tournament losing to Stanford's No. 4 KC Corkery and Tom Warburg. Klaus Jank and Andy Kuharszky also suffered a first round defeat, losing to TJ Bellama and Jonathan Kinsella of Arizona State 8-5.

In the invitational doubles draw, David Chu and Andy Gerst defeated Arizona's Nathan Cochrane and Francois Vandermerwe 9-8 to advance to the semifinals. Chu and Gerst will face Whit Livingston and Nathan Stadler of USC on Saturday at 2:00 P.M. Jean-Noel Insausti and Mike Ricks also secured themselves a spot in the semifinals with an 8-4 win over Fernanco Freitas and Hugh McDonald. The duo will face Phil Kao and Chris Rasmussen of Stanford on Saturday at 2:00 P.M.

The Pac-10 Tournament will feature the respective semifinal matches on Saturday with the action concluding on Sunday April 28 as a champion is crowned.
