No. 3 California Defeats the No. 16 Cardinal at The Big Row

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The California Golden Bears won all six of the races in the dual race against Stanford, Saturday morning at Redwood Shores. Facing a strong headwind, the Cal varsity eight won their fourth consecutive dual matchup against Stanford.

The third varsity eight jumped out to an early five second lead and slowly extended their advantage to 17 seconds by the end of the race.

The women's varsity four A fell behind Stanford at the start of the race, trailing by three seconds after 500 meters. By the 1000 meter mark Cal had nearly caught up, trailing by only .33 seconds. Over the last 1000 meters Cal passed Stanford and finished eight seconds ahead of the Cardinal

The women's varsity four B dominated their race, capturing a five second lead by the 500 meter mark and steadily outrowing the Cardinal. The Bears finished 16 seconds ahead of Stanford.

In the women's varsity eight race, the Bears jumped out to an early four second lead after 500 meters, and the Bears never let up. At the 1000 meter mark Cal had a nine second lead. At the conclusion of the race Cal had stretched their lead to nearly 16 seconds over the Cardinal.

The second varsity eight started off strong and dominated their race throughout, claiming a four second lead after just 500 meters and 15 seconds by the 1500 meter mark. The Bears finished the race more than 18 seconds ahead of Stanford.

The Bear's novice eight came out strong, capturing a five second lead within 500 meters and slowly extending the lead to 14 seconds before the halfway mark. Cal held a 25 second lead over Stanford as they crossed the finish line.

'We didn't talk about racing Stanford,' said Head Coach Dave O'Neill. 'The focus was to have a great effort and a lot of fun. We did that and we were fast. Stanford is a really good team and for us to do so well against a team like Stanford means a lot. Everybody is excited for the championship season.'

Cal will travel to Lake Natoma, outside of Sacramento for the Pac-10 Championships Saturday, May 14.
