April 29, 2006
BERKELEY, CALIF. - The California Golden Bears won the Schwabacher Cup, winning all three of the races in the dual race against Stanford, Saturday morning at Redwood Shores. Facing a strong headwind, Cal won their races with a 21.5 second average margin of victory.
In the men's varsity eight race, the Bears jumped out to an early lead of .55 seconds after 500 meters, and the Bears never let up. At the 1000 meter mark Cal had a one length lead. Throughout much of the race Stanford was steering off course, and between the 1000 meter mark and the 1500 meter mark the Cardinal boat was residing in Cal's lane. The Bears took advantage of Stanford's poor positioning and extended their lead to almost three seconds by the 1500 meter mark. At the conclusion of the race Cal had stretched their lead to a full three seconds.
The second varsity eight started off dominated their race throughout, claiming a two second lead after just 500 meters and seven seconds by the 1500 meter mark. The Bears finished the race 14 seconds ahead of Stanford.
The Bear's varsity four also held an multi-length lead by 500 meters and a 19 second lead at the half way point. The Bears continued to dominate the race, eventually finishing more than 47 seconds ahead of the Cardinal.
Cal will travel to Lake Natoma, outside of Sacramento for the Pac-10 Championships Saturday, May 14.
