Softball Falls in a Tough 1-0 Loss to #1 UCLA

April 29, 2006

WESTWOOD, Calif. - The #7 ASU Softball team suffered a tough 1-0 loss to the #1 UCLA Bruins Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium as Desiree Serrano pitched well for the Sun Devils, but ASU was unable to get any offense rolling as they tacked only 1 hit on the Bruins. The Sun Devils fall to 42-8 overall and 6-5 in Pac-10 play while the top-ranked Bruins now sit on a 39-5 record and an 11-3 conference record.

The game remained quiet as Serrano and the Devils held UCLA to only three hits, with Serrano striking out five on the day, while Lisa Dodd and Anjelica Selden split the pitching duties with Dodd allowing only one hit to ASU, a single through the left side to Heidi Knabe in the sixth.

The difference in the game came in the sixth for the Bruins as with two outs and no one on, the second-baseman, Caitlin Benyi crushed a triple to the right field wall, where she was later brought home on a wild pitch that got away from Serrano, which Benyi capitalized on a grabbed home scoring the only run on the day.

The Sun Devils made an attempt to rally back in the seventh with back-to-back walks to Kaitlin Cochran and Rhiannon Baca, who were advanced on a wild pitch, but were shut down by Selden with two strikeouts and a pop fly to second to end the game.

The Sun Devils will have a chance to retaliate against the Bruins tomorrow as they face off again at Easton Stadium at 1 p.m.
