April 29, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - Zach McAngus went 3-for-4 with a home run Saturday as the Washington State Cougars defeated the USC Trojans, 13-7, in Pac-10 Conference action at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Cougars used a 15-hit attack and two five-run innings to tie the series at one game apiece.
USC freshman starter Tommy Milone (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing nine runs in 4 1/3 innings while WSU starter Wayne Daman, Jr., gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings. Steve Kost was credited with the win after allowing two runs in one inning of relief.
Junior Cyle Hankerd went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI for the Trojans.
Hankerd blasted his second home run in as many days with a two-run shot to left in the first, his ninth on the year. WSU answered with five runs in the third on six straight singles with the final run coming on a double steal with runners at the corners. Hector Estrella's throw from second base was too late to catch Jay Miller at the plate.
The Cougars opened the bottom of the fifth with three straight singles off Milone with Jared Prince hitting an RBI single to left for a 6-5 lead. Pinch hitter Steve Suttmeier hit a safety squeeze to first, but Lucas Duda's throw was late to make it a 7-5 Cougars lead. WSU scored three more times as 10 batters came to the plate, giving the Cougars a 10-5 lead after five innings.
Hankerd's RBI double and sacrifice fly by Baron Frost in the USC sixth cut the lead to 10-7, but the Cougars added another run in the seventh and two more in the eighth on McAngus' third home run this season.
The series concludes tomorrow at noon. Gametracker live stats will be available, with no audio, on usctrojans.com.
