Softball Defeats Arizona State, 3-1, on Senior Day
April 30, 2006
LOS ANGELES - Andrea Duran went 2-for-2 with a two-RBI single on Sunday afternoon as UCLA posted a 3-1 victory over Arizona State on Senior Day at Easton Stadium. UCLA's four seniors, Caitlin Benyi, Duran, Alissa Eno and Emily Zaplatosch, were honored prior to the game. Sophomore pitcher Anjelica Selden struck out seven in the win, tying Lisa Fernandez for third place on UCLA's all-time strikeout list with 784 career K's.
Arizona State struck first, as Kaitlin Cochran led off the game with a home run, her 12th of the season. Selden then retired the next seven and 16 of the next 17 Sun Devil batters as her offense went to work.
UCLA had back-to-back singles from Duran and Krista Colburn in the bottom half of the first inning, but ASU's Katie Burkhart then retired the side on strikeouts to end the inning and the threat. UCLA's offense opened the third inning with a slap-hit single just past the bag at third base by Tara Henry, who was sacrificed to second by Duran and easily scored on a double off the wall in right centerfield by Colburn, tying the game at 1-1.
In the fourth, Jodie Legaspi led off with a single just fair down the third base line and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lisa Dodd, with the ball being mis-handled at first base leaving two Bruins on the basepaths with no outs. Whitney Holum then put down a successful sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. UCLA head coach Sue Enquist then sent Alissa Eno in to pinch run at first base and put Kristen Dedmon in to pinch hit. Dedmon would be hit by the first pitch she faced, loading the bases. Ashley Herrera would re-enter the game to run for Dedmon.
After Tara Henry grounded into a fielders choice with the out at the plate, Duran stepped in and crushed a single up the middle, scoring both Eno and Herrera to give the Bruins a 3-1 lead.
That was all the offense that Selden would need as she struck out seven in the contest, tying Lisa Fernandez with 784 career strikeouts with a K of Kristen Miller in the fifth inning.
The Bruins return to action next weekend with a Friday game at Oregon and a weekend set at Oregon State.
