Softball Falls to UCLA 3-1

April 30, 2006

WESTWOOD, Calif. - Despite solid pitching and defense, the #7 Sun Devil Softball team suffered another loss at the hands of the top-ranked UCLA Bruins (40-5, 12-3 Pac-10) Sunday afternoon at Easton Stadium as the Devils fell 3-1 to the Bruins. ASU is now 42-9 on the season and an even 6-6 in conference play.

The Sun Devils didn't wait to take the lead from the Bruins as lead-off hitter Kaitlin Cochran stepped in to put one over the right field fence as she hit her 12th home run of the year to put the Devils up 1-0. The Bruins threatened in the bottom of the inning as two lead-off singles put runners on first and second, but Katie Burkhart settled in to strike out the next three and keep the Bruins scoreless.

The Bruins tied it up in the third with a single from Tara Henry advanced with a sac bunt and brought home on a Krista Colburn double, bringing it to 1-1. UCLA struck again in the fourth as the brought in two off a Sun Devil error and two singles from Jodie Legaspi and Andrea Duran giving UCLA a 3-1 lead after four innings.

The Sun Devils couldn't answer though as Selden shut down their offense for the rest of the game with seven strikeouts, which ties her for third all-time in strikeouts in UCLA history with Lisa Fernandez.

ASU will return to action again this Wednesday as they head to Tucson to take on their in-state rival, the #3 Wildcats of Arizona in the series-deciding game at 7 p.m. at the University of Arizona.
