May 2, 2006
MORAGA, CALIF. - Junior center fielder Brennan Boesch broke a 6-6 tie with an RBI single in the sixth inning, and freshman left-hander Chris Petrini earned his first collegiate save, as Cal defeated Saint Mary's, 7-6, Tuesday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga. The Golden Bears, who won their fourth straight game, improved to 23-22, while the Gaels fell to 24-19.
Cal had jumped out to a 6-0 lead by scoring two runs in the second inning when sophomore first baseman Mike Van Winden led-off the inning with a double and scored on junior catcher Garrett Bussiere's two-run homer. The Bears added four more runs in the top of the third when junior left fielder Chris Errecart and Boesch started the inning with back-to-back singles, followed by sophomore third baseman Travis Howell's three-run homer - the first home run of his collegiate career. Cal added another run on sophomore second baseman Kyle Spraker's RBI bunt single.
Saint Mary's came back, however, when Preston Young had an RBI single and Michael Harris had a fielder's choice RBI in the bottom of the fourth. The Gaels then scored four runs in the fifth inning on a RBI single by Sam Carter, a two-run single by Harris and a RBI double by Orben Frederick.
The Bears were able to finally get out of the fifth when winning relief pitcher Alex Trafton (3-3, 2.3 innings, one hit, no earned runs, two walks, two strikeouts) was able to get Cody Guymon to ground out to first base with a runner in scoring position.
In the top of the sixth, senior shortstop Allen Craig was hit by a Michael Nisco (2-3, 4.0 innings, three hits, one run, two walks, five strikeouts) pitch with one out. Errecart followed with a walk, putting Craig in scoring position and setting up Boesch's game-winning RBI.
Saint Mary's was not done threatening to score. Trafton was able to get out of the seventh inning with a Gael in scoring position, and then Petrini (2.0 innings, two hits) came in in the eighth inning and was able to get out of jams in both the eighth and ninth innings when SMC had runners in scoring position.
