No. 5/6 Stanford Hosts San Jose State Tonight

No. 5/6 Stanford Softball (34-12, 7-8) hosts San Jose State (22-22, 10-4) at 7:00 pm tonight in the last non-conference game of the regular season. This is the first time the two teams will meet this season, with Stanford taking a 2-0 win over the Spartans in 2005. The Cardinal leads the series against San Jose State, 15-10.
Stanford hosts the mid-week contest after returning from a three-game road trip to Oregon. The Cardinal fell to Oregon, 9-0, before taking down No. 8/9 Oregon State on Saturday, 7-5. Stanford came back from behind with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to power past the Beavers. Seniors Catalina Morris and Lauren Lappin both collected home runs against the Beavers on Saturday. On Sunday, the Cardinal fell, 4-0, after Oregon State took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Morris currently leads the Cardinal hitters with a .377 average, 30 runs, 29 RBI and seven home runs on the season. Junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart is hitting .359 with 20 runs and 10 RBI, while Lappin has tallied a .353 average, 34 runs, 23 RBI and one home run. Freshman pitcher Missy Penna has amassed an 18-7 record and a 2.10 ERA, striking out 146 batters on the season. Sophomore Becky McCullough, who tallied a win on Saturday against OSU, is 9-4 with a 1.94 ERA, while senior Laura Severson is 7-0 with a 2.35 ERA.
For the Spartans, Courtney Lewis leads the squad with a .338 batting average, 24 runs, 14 RBI, one home run and five triples. Britta McConnell paces the team with five home runs this year. Lewis also boasts the lowest ERA in the circle with 2.99, going 10-6 on the season with 83 strikeouts.
Following tonight's game, the Cardinal will return to the road to play Arizona State on Friday, May 5 (7:00 pm) and Arizona on Saturday, May 6 (1:00 pm) and Sunday, May 7 (1:00 pm).
