No. 8 Cardinal Rallies To Beat Spartans, 4-3, In Eight Innings

Stanford, Calif. - No. 8 Stanford Softball (34-12, 7-8) rallied to take down San Jose State (22-23, 10-4) tonight, 4-3, in eight innings. The Cardinal fell behind by three runs in the first inning, but came within a run in the sixth off of a double by sophomore Michelle Smith. Junior Jackie Rinehart brought home junior Lindsay Key in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, and sophomore Anna Beardman slammed home sophomore Erin Howe for the game-winning run in the eighth inning. Freshman pitcher Missy Penna improves to 19-7 with the win, striking out eight batters.
San Jose State's Danielle Eakins hit a single to left field to open the first inning and Mandy Winkley was walked on base. Jessica Guillen then hit a home run over the center field fence, scoring all three runners for the Spartans.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Howe collected the Cardinal's first hit with a single to right field. Key followed with a base hit to advance Howe. Sophomore Tricia Aggabao then knocked a single to left field, but Howe was out at third base on the play. The fourth inning ended with two runners left on base.
Senior Catalina Morris opened the bottom of the sixth inning with a bunt to get on base. Rinehart then slapped a single to the first baseman, moving Morris to second. Senior Lauren Lappin reached on a fielder's choice, but Morris was out at third base on the play. Freshman Maddy Coon also reached on a fielder's choice, and Rinehart was out at third. With two outs, Smith slammed a double to the center field fence, bringing home Lappin and Coon. After six full innings, the Cardinal trailed, 3-2.
Penna struck out two batters in the top of the seventh to bring the Cardinal to the plate. Key was walked on base and Aggabao followed with a double to left field to move Key to third base. Spartan pitcher Kelly Harrison entered the circle for San Jose State and Morris was intentionally walked to load the bases. Rinehart then knocked a base hit to the shortstop and Key scored on an error, tying the game at 3-3.
In the top of the eighth inning, Penna struck out two batters to bring the Cardinal up to bat. Howe reached second base on an error by the leftfielder and Aggabao followed with a single to the second baseman, moving Howe to third. With two outs, Beardman stepped up and slammed a single to left field, scoring Howe for the game-winning run. Stanford claimed the win, 4-3.
In eight innings, Penna struck out eight batters, walked two and allowed just three hits. San Jose State's Courtney Lewis struck out three batters, walked two and allowed seven hits in six innings, while Harrison walked one batter and allowed three hits in just over one inning.
The Cardinal now returns to the road to face Arizona State on Friday, May 5 (7:00 pm), before matching up against Arizona on Saturday, May 6 (7:00 pm) and Sunday, May 7 (1:00 pm).
