Back on March 28, UCLA jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over UC Riverside in the first inning. Freshman Blair Dunlap got the action started with a leadoff walk, followed by a single through the right side by freshman Brandon Crawford to move him to third. Senior Chris Jensen was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Junior Tim Stewart followed with a walk to score Dunlap, and Crawford scored on a wild pitch to Ambriz. UC Riverside got on the board in the first inning as D.J. Hollingsworth scored from third as Brian Steinmeyer was caught in a run down trying to steal second, cutting UCLA's lead to 4-1.

UCLA put two more runs on the board to go up 6-1. Ambriz hit a towering shot to right center field that landed on the warning track and bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double to score Stewart from second after he singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior Josh Roenicke kept the inning alive with a two-out single to first base to advance Ambriz to third base. Senior Brett McMillan followed with a RBI single to right field to score Ambriz and give the Bruins a five-run cushion.

The Highlanders added two more runs to cut the Bruin lead to 6-3 on a two-run single through the left side with two outs by Steinmeyer.

On May 2, the Bruins loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning, an inning they have waited over a month to play.
