Cal Women Host, Men Travel to Stanford in NCAA Regional

May 3, 2006

BERKELEY - The 11th-ranked California women's tennis team (16-7) earned its 25th consecutive NCAA Tournament bid Wednesday, when it was announced that the Bears earned a No. 10 seed and will host Western Michigan (20-5) in the NCAA Regional. Cal will play Western Michigan on Friday May 12 at 10 a.m. at Hellman Tennis Complex. The 20th-ranked men's tennis team (15-6) earned its sixth consecutive NCAA bid also on Wednesday. The men's team will travel across the Bay to face Santa Barbara in Palo Alto, Calif., on Saturday, May 13.

'We are happy to host and excited about our draw,' Cal women's head coach Jan Brogan said.

In the women's regional in Berkeley, Sacramento State and Fresno State will make up the other pairing in a match starting Friday at 1 p.m. (PDT). Should Cal defeat Western Michigan, the Bears will play either Sacramento State or second-seeded Fresno State on Saturday, May 13 at noon. The winner of the regional will advance to the round of 16, which will be hosted by Stanford, May 18-21.

The Cal women are one of only three teams, along with Stanford and UCLA, to participate in all 25 NCAA Tournaments since the competition's inception in 1982. Cal has reached the quarterfinal round 16 times and earned NCAA semifinal berths in 1985, '86, '99, 2000 and '03. Last year, the then-24th-ranked Bears upset No. 9 Miami, 4-3, to advance to the NCAA Tournament round of 16, before falling to No. 8 Georgia, 4-2.

The Golden Bear women have been ranked among the top 15 teams in the country for the past 12 weeks and currently boast five singles players and one doubles team among the nation's elite. Suzi Fodor currently holds the No. 3 singles, ranking in the nation and Suzi Babos is 27th. Stephanie Kusano is ranked No. 85, while Cristina Visico is 88th and Marion Ravelojaona is 124th.

The men will face Santa Barbara on the Stanford campus on Saturday, May 13. The time is yet to be determined. Joining Cal in Palo Alto are 13th-seed Stanford and Quinnipac. The second round will be played on Sunday, May 14.

Tickets will be on sale for the women's matches outside of Hellman Tennis Complex and are $8 for adults and $4 for seniors, youth and students.
