May 3, 2006

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford women's soccer will continue its spring season by hosting Saint Mary's on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on Maloney Field. The Cardinal and the Gaels are increasingly familiar with each other, as the two coaching staffs have a shared history.

Stanford's Paul Ratcliffe began his head coaching career in Moraga in 1998 before arriving on The Farm in 2003. As well, Cardinal assistant Jay Cooney coached Saint Mary's new head coach, Kelly Lindsey, when she played for WUSA's CyberRays. Finally, Cardinal assistant Sarah Kate Noftsinger and Gaels' assistant Monica Gerardo played together for the Washington Freedom.

The Cardinal has had a successful spring season so far, winning the Cal Seven-v-Seven Tournament last wekekend in Berkeley and finishing second at the Stanford KICKS Against Breast Cancer Tournament two weeks ago. The Cardinal won the Cal title with a 5-0 blanking of its cross-Bay rival, avenging its KICKS championship match loss to the Golden Bears from the previous week.

Stanford went undefeated on the day, sweeping through pool play early in the day and notching win over Chico State, East Bay Power, Sac State, UC Davis, and for the second time in as many weeks, besting Santa Clara. Stanford then upended Pacific, 1-0, in the semis to advance to the finals against Cal.
