Hicks Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar

May 3, 2006

Seattle - Eight Washington athletes were named 2006 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars. The award honors undergraduate students of color for excellence in the classroom and on the playing field. The Huskies that received recognition were: women's basketball player Cameo Hicks (honorable mention), gymnast Jennifer Chang, women's track and field athlete Brynne Steward (4th team), volleyball players Candace Lee (1st team) and Ashley Aratani (2nd team), men's swimmer Tamon Page, men's tennis player Daniel Chu and men's track and field/cross country athlete Mark Mandi (2nd team).

Candace Lee and Mark Mandi were also recipients of the award in 2005.

Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, Diverse Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to recognize outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism.

To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.

University of Florida women's basketball player Sarah Lowe and Florida State University football player David Castillo were selected as Sports Scholars of the Year for best exemplifying the standards of scholarship, athleticism and humanitarianism.
