Nguyen, Caldwell Earn 2006 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Honors

UCLA junior pole vaulter Jackie Nguyen and junior distance runner Ashley Caldwell have earned 2006 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Awards, announced in the April 6, 2006 issue of Diverse Magazine (Issues In Higher Education).
Named for Bruin great and professional tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr., the Sports Scholars Awards were established to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving - academically, athletically and in community activism a winning combination.
Nguyen (Castilleja HS/Atherton, CA) earned first-team women's track & field honors for the second year in a row. A physiological science major with a 3.70gpa, she is a member of the Bruin Athletic Council Executive Committee and last June attended the NCAA Leadership Conference in Florida to represent all UCLA student-athletes. She has been a volunteer for Asthma Reading Advocacy Program at King-Drew Medical Center tutoring children with asthma.
On April 29, when the Bruin women defeated USC 90-73 in the dual meet at UCLA's Drake Stadium, Nguyen won the pole vault with a lifetime best 13-7.25 (No. 4 in school history). An All-Pac-10 and MPSF All-Academic selection in her Bruin career, Nguyen earned NCAA Outdoor All-American honors in 2004 by placing fifth in the pole vault, with a then career-best 13-5.25.
Caldwell (Los Gatos HS, CA) earned fourth-team honors and in 2005 she was a third-team recipient. A political science major with a 3.32gpa, she has volunteered for Project Chicken Soup (preparing and delivering food to AIDS patients) and participated in Dr. Seuss Reading Day in downtown Los Angeles
In UCLA's recent dual meet victory over USC, Caldwell won the 1500m (4:31.30), placed second in the 800m (2:14.66) and was third in the 5000m (17:46.57). A three-time All-American in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, Caldwell's best times are 2:05.01 in the 800m (No. 4 in school history) and 4:22.05 in the 1500m. In her Bruin career she's earned All-Pac-10 and MPSF All-Academic.
