Bruin Softball Downs Ducks, 7-0
May 5, 2006
EUGENE, ORE. - An 11-strikeout performance from Anjelica Selden paired with a five-run second inning helped the Bruins (41-5, 13-3 Pac-10) past Oregon by a score of 7-0 on Friday afternoon in Eugene. Krista Colburn and Andrea Duran both had multi-RBI days for UCLA.
A two-out rally plated five Bruin runs in the fifth inning. Jodie Legaspi led off the inning with a single up the middle and she was sacrificed to second by Lisa Dodd. After Whitney Holum drew a walk, Ashley Herrera also put down a successful sacrifice bunt, giving the Bruins two runners in scoring position for Tara Henry. An at-bat in which Henry saw double-figure pitches, she completed the at-bat with a single to shallow left field, scoring Legaspi for the first run of the game.
Andrea Duran walked to load the bases for Krista Colburn, who put a two-RBI single up the middle just to the left of the bag at second, making the score 3-0 in UCLA's favor. A Caitlin Benyi single plated Duran for UCLA's fourth run. Benyi advanced to second on the throw from the outfield to the plate, but an errant throw to the bag at second scored Colburn to bring the lead to 5-0.
In the sixth, Herrera and Henry led off with consecutive slap-hit singles. On Henry's hit, there was not a Duck covering second base and she was able to take the advance on the play, leaving runners on second and third for Duran. Duran missed her 13th home run of the season by inches, putting a triple off of the yellow piping atop the outfield fence in right center for her fourth triple of the season, scoring Herrera and Henry to make the score 7-0.
In the circle, Bruin sophomore pitcher Anjelica Selden posted 11 strikeouts. Her first strikeout of the day, the first out of the first inning, gave her 785 career strikeouts, passing Lisa Fernandez for sole possession of third place on UCLA's career strikeout list.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday at 1 pm in Corvallis, Ore., against No. 5 Oregon State.
