May 5, 2006
STANFORD, CALIF. - In a great college pitching battle between Cal's Brandon Morrow and Stanford's Greg Reynolds, the Cardinal finally prevailed, 3-2, Friday night at Sunken Diamond. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Stanford's Randy Molina knocked in Chris Minaker with a RBI single through the left side of the infield off of Morrow for the winning run. The Golden Bears dropped to 23-23 overall and 8-11 in the Pac-10, and the Cardinal improved to 21-20 and 6-10 in league. It was Cal's 11th one-run loss of the season.
Reynolds improved his record to 5-3 by throwing 9.0 innings with six hits, two runs, two walks and four strikeouts. In the top of the ninth he yielding a lead-off single to the Bears' junior center fielder Brennan Boesch, followed by Josh Satin's sacrifice bunt to advance Boesch to second. Reynolds then struck out Mike Van Winden before walking Travis Howell. With two outs and runners on first and second, junior catcher Garrett Bussiere lined a shot at Reynolds' head, but the junior right-hander was able to miraculously catch the ball to end the inning.
Despite the loss, Morrow (7-3) was outstanding, throwing 8.3 innings with six hits, three runs, no walks and 11 strikeouts - one short of his career-high. He gave up his runs via two solo home runs by Stanford shortstop Minaker, who homered in the fourth and sixth innings, and the game-winning hit by Molina after Minaker had led-off the bottom of the ninth with a chopper past Cal third baseman Josh Satin.
Satin had started the game's scoring when he hit a solo homer off of Reynolds in the top of the fourth inning. The Bears added a run in the sixth when junior left fielder Chris Errecart was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a Boesch single. Errecart then scored on Reynold's wild pitch.
Boesch led Cal at the plate, going 3-for-4, while senior shortstop Allen Craig finished 2-for-4.
The Bears will next face Stanford in the second game of the three-game Pac-10 series, Saturday, May 6 at 4 p.m. at Sunken Diamond. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net Bay Area.
