No. 11 Cal Competes at NCAA East Regional

CAL COMPETES AT NCAA EAST REGIONAL: Making its seventh consecutive postseason appearance, No. 11 California travels to the NCAA East Regional Thursday-Saturday, May 11-13 at the Bryan Park Golf Course in Browns Summit, N.C. Wake Forest serves as host of the 21-team tournament at the par-72, 6,386-yard course. Eighteen holes will be played each day beginning at 8 a.m. ET Thursday and Friday and 8:10 a.m. ET Saturday. Cal will open competition Thursday at 9 a.m. from the 10th hole. A practice round is slated for Wednesday. The top eight teams and two individuals from non-advancing teams at each of the three regionals qualify for the NCAA Championships to be played May 23-26 in Columbus, Ohio. The Bears, who have made six straight and overall appearances at NCAAs, placed fifth in 2005 for their second consecutive top-five showing.
FAMILIAR COURSE: Cal is fortunate to have already played the Bryan Park Golf Course at the Bryan National Collegiate March 31-April 2, 2006. The Bears placed ninth out of 17 teams (+45, 909) but improved each round (310-300-299).
THE FIELD: Fifth-seeded Cal is joined at the East Regional by (in order of seeds, Golfweek rankings listed): No. 3 Arizona State, No. 4 Auburn, No. 9 Tennessee, No. 13 Wake Forest, No. 14 Vanderbilt, No. 18 Virginia, No. 26 South Carolina, No. 30 LSU, No. 33 Florida State, No. 35 Alabama, No. 37 North Carolina State, No. 32 Augusta State, No. 45 Maryland, No. 46 Furman, No. 40 North Carolina, No. 49 Mississippi State, No. 62 Campbell, No. 59 College of Charleston, No. 60 East Carolina and No. 78 Yale. Louisville's Adrienne White, South Florida's Christina Jones and North Carolina-Wilmington's Michelle Jarman will compete as individuals.

CAL'S NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY: Cal is making its seventh consecutive and overall appearance in an NCAA regional this year. The Bears' postseason history began with a 22nd-place showing at the NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz. Cal qualified for its first of five NCAA Championships in 2001 by placing eighth at the NCAA Central Regional in West Lafayette, Ind. Cal's other NCAA regional results include: third in 2002 (West), first in 2003 (Central), fourth in 2004 (West) and third in 2005 (West). This is the first time Cal has been sent to the East Regional. In 2005, then-junior Sophia Sheridan led Cal by capturing her first collegiate title by five shots (212, -4). Cal's Sofie Andersson tied for sixth (220) at the NCAA West Regional.
PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP: Cal placed fourth at the 2006 Pac-10 Championships with a score of 32-over 896, with Sophia Sheridan tying for third to lead the team (+3, 216). It marked the fifth consecutive year that Cal placed in the top half of the conference. UCLA won its third straight conference crown. Sofie Andersson tied for 15th (+13, 226) for the Bears. Both athletes earned second-team All-Pac-10 recognition.
MULTIPLE LEADERS: Three golfers have led Cal in at least one tournament this season. Sofie Andersson held top honors in four of the first five tournaments and paced the Bears at the Peg Barnard Collegiate (third place), while senior Sophia Sheridan recorded the Bears' top performance in three straight events this spring - the Wildcat Invitational (second), the Cal Guadalajara Invitational (T15th) and the Bryan National Collegiate (T26th). Sheridan paced the Bears for the fourth time in 2005-06 at the Pac-10 Championships. Junior Mika Takayama led Cal at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in October, tying for 12th for her best finish of the season.
