May 7, 2006

STANFORD, CALIF. - California out-hit Stanford, 12-8, but was not able to take advantage of some scoring opportunities, falling to the Cardinal, 6-4, Sunday at Sunken Diamond. The Golden Bears, who won one of three in the Pac-10 series against Stanford, fell to 24-24 overall and 9-12 in the Pac-10. The Cardinal improved to 22-21 and 7-11 in league. Stanford won Friday night, 3-2, and Cal rebounded to win, 5-1, Saturday.

Earlier in the year, the Bears won the non-conference series versus the Cardinal at Evans Diamond.

Down 6-3 in the top of the ninth with one out, the Bears threatened when Travis Howell and Brett Munster walked and senior right fielder Rob Nesbitt scored Howell with an RBI single to left to get within, 6-4. Senior shortstop Allen Craig then loaded the bases with an infield single to short, only to see junior left fielder Chris Errecart ground into a double play (third to home to first) to end the game.

The winning pitcher for Stanford was reliever Jeremy Bleich (3-4), who entered the contest in the fifth and threw 4.3 innings with two hits, one run and two walks. Erik Davis earned his second save of the season when he forced Errecart into a double play after giving up the single to Craig. The losing pitcher for Cal was sophomore starter Alex Rollin (0-1, 3.7 innings, four hits, four runs, three earned runs, one walk, three strikeouts).

Another scoring opportunity for the Bears was in the fifth inning. Down 4-2, Craig hit a lead-off homer to get the Bears within 4-3. Errecart then hit a single to left and junior center fielder Brennan Boesch followed with a double to put runners on second and third. However, Josh Satin hit into a double play when he grounded hard to third base, forcing out Errecart between third and home, and Boesch ended up getting thrown out at third. Mike Van Winden grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.

Cal started the day's scoring when Van Winden led-off the second with a single and later scored on Howell's single to right. The Cardinal came back to score twice in the bottom of the third on a passed ball by Howell and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Seawell. The Bears added a run in the fourth inning on Munster's sacrifice fly to right, but Stanford added two runs in the bottom of the fourth on Chris Lewis' two-run homer off of Rollin for the 4-2 lead.

Cal did not quit as Craig hit his homer in the fifth and Nesbitt knocked his one-out RBI single in the ninth, but the Cardinal gave themselves a cushion with a fielder's choice RBI by Jason Castro in the sixth inning and Lewis' RBI single in the eighth inning.

Nesbitt, Craig, Errecart, Boesch and Howell all finished with two hits apiece for the Bears, while Craig hit his 10th home run of the season to tie Boesch as the team leader.

Cal will next host San Francisco on Tuesday, May 9, and Santa Clara on Wednesday, May 10. Both games, which were added to the schedule due to rainouts, will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond.

Home Runs:

Cal: Craig, solo home run in the fifth inning.

Stanford: Lewis, two-run homer in the fourth inning.
