Softball Shut Out by #7 Cal, 3-0

May 7, 2006

TEMPE, Ariz. - With solid pitching from Kristina Thorson and eight hits on the day, the #7 Cal Golden Bears shut out the #6 Sun Devil Softball team, 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Farrington Stadium in Tempe. ASU is now 43-12 on the year with a 7-9 conference record, while Cal improves to 42-11 overall and 9-8 in Pac-10 play.

Though ASU's Katie Burkhart pitched a great game, striking out 12, the Bears were able to grab the lead early in the second inning as sophomore, Chloe Kloezeman hit a lead-off solo home run over the left field wall to put Cal's first run on the board. The Bears added another run after two Sun Devil errors loaded the bases and brought home another, upping the Bears 2-0.

Cal added another run in the third as Kloezeman hit a double to left center and was later brought home after back-to-back singles from Julie Meyer and Jeana Gevas to give Cal the 3-0 boost.

The Sun Devil offense was unable to answer though as Thorson kept them hitless for three innings before Jessica Mapes singled to left field in the fourth. ASU threatened in the sixth after loading the bases with singles from Jackie Vasquez, Jessica Mapes and Kaitlin Cochran, but were unable to plate anyone as Cal rolled on to a 3-0 win.

The Sun Devils will return to action next week as they face Oregon and OregonState in the final weekend of regular season play. ASU will host a double header on Thursday against OregonState with the first game set to start at 4:30 and the second of the series to start at 7 p.m. at ASU's Farrington Stadium in Tempe.
