Senior Ryan Witz Selected to Compete at NCAA West Regionals
May 8, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University's Ryan Witz has been selected by the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee to compete as an individual at the NCAA West Regional hosted by the University of Arizona at the par-72, 7,200 yard Omni Tuscon National Golf Club May 18- May 20.
The senior from Tuscon, Ariz., will be traveling to his home state to make his first appearance at a NCAA tournament. He will also become the first Cougar to compete at the regional tournament since 2002.
'I'm really excited for him. This is his final semester and he is going home to Tuscon where he is from,' said Head Coach Walt Williams.
The NCAA Regionals will cap off a senior campaign that produced five top-10 efforts, including a first place honor at the Duck (University of Oregon) Invitational, and an All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention.
'Last week Ryan received All-Pac-10 honors and now he's in the NCAA Regional. He's had a nice spring, a very nice last semester,' added Williams. 'He has always been a good ball striker and putter, but a little impatient on the course. This year he has learned to be more patient. He lets the scores come to him and that patience has paid off.'
Since transferring to WSU in the fall of 2004, Witz has carded six top-10 finishes and nine top-25 efforts. Before joining the Cougar team, Witz placed second at the NJCAA National Championships with Pima Community College and earned junior college All-America honors his sophomore season.
The NCAA West Regional will be played out over three days with 18 holes a day teeing off at 7:00 a.m. The top 10 teams and two individuals in the event will qualify for the 2006 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, May 31-June 3 at the Crosswater Club at the Sunriver Resort at Sunriver, Ore.
