Fifty Cougars Set to Compete at Pac-10 Track & Field Championships

PACIFIC-10 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS SECOND WEEKEND: Washington State University will send 50 student-athletes to the Pacific-10 Conference Track & Field Championships, Presented by 76 ProClean Gasolines, May 13-14, at the Oregon's Hayward Field....this is the 76th annual men's and 20th annual women's conference championship meets...ten conference schools (Oregon State have women only) will compete in the two-day meet with the team champions being crowned Sunday around 5:55 p.m...Saturday's events being at 1:50 p.m. with the men's 4x100m relay trials and end with the women's 10k, set for 6:55 p.m...Sunday's events begin at 1:45 p.m. with the men's discus throw and conclude with the women's 4x400m relay at 5:45 p.m...results can be found both evenings at www.goducks.com and at www.wsucougars.com.
CONFERENCE FINISHES LAST YEAR/THIS YEAR: Oregon won men's 2005 team title while Stanford claimed the women's title...Cougar women placed sixth in 2005 (74.5 points) and WSU men were ninth (36.5 points)...after the first events of the 2006 Pac-10 Championships, Arizona State leads the women's standings with 10 points while WSU and Oregon's women tied for second with 9 points each...the Oregon men have 11 points the lead in the men's standings.PAC-10 TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS ON FOX SPORTS TV NETWORK: The delayed highlight broadcast of the 2006 Pac-10 Track & Field Championships will be shown on the FOX Sports Net affiliates between May 18-24...check cable listings for the exact date and time for your viewing area...in the Washington, FOX Sports Northwest will air the two-hour telecast Thursday, May 18 at Noon., Sat., May 20 at 4 p.m. and Sun., May 21 at 1 p.m.
ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 33rd season with the Cougar track program; 12th year as a head coach, 11th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Jason Drake (Head Coach Cross Country), Mark Macdonald, Ellannee Richardson and Matt McGee...volunteer coach Andrea Thornton returns for her third year with the program...coaches Farwell, Macdonald, Richardson, McGee and Thornton all competed for WSU.

DILES HONORED AT WSU SENIOR BANQUET: Cougar All-American and school record-holder pole vaulter Tamara Diles (Bellevue, Wash.) was honored at the WSU Athletics Senior Banquet, May 5...Diles took home the Student-Athlete Advisory Council's True Cougar Award, the PROWL- TeamCARE Award, the Beulah M. Blankenship Outstanding Student-Athlete Award, and the Pacific-10 Conference Postgraduate Scholarship.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL COUGAR THROWERS CAR WASH: Throwers from the Washington State University track and field team raised over $2000 at their fourth annual car wash Sunday, April 23...money raised will assist with the costs of Cougar teammate Eric Nygard's medical expenses. WRISTBANDS FOR NYGARD: The WSU Track & Field teams are selling wristbands for senior hurdler Eric Nygard (Wenatchee, Wash.)...Nygard, a scorer in the 400m hurdles at the 2005 Pac-10 Championships, was diagnosed with testicular cancer in October 2005...Eric is married and has an infant daughter...wristbands are black with a quote from Charles Beard, selected by Nygard, in yellow lettering, 'When it's dark enough, you can see the stars' and his initials, E.N...cost is $5 (medium and large)...to purchase a wristband, contact Cougar assistant coach Ellannee Richardson at 509-335-4730...a benevolent account has been established at Washington Mutual Bank under his name for donations to assist with medical expenses and can be made at any WaMu branch.
WICCCA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA TEAMS: Cougar sophomore All-American Haley Paul (Phoenix) had the 10th-best grade point average (3.930) among cross country Div. I women and was honored by the Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association as an Academic All-American...the WSU women's cross country team had a GPA of 3.399 and were among the top 60 women's teams in the nation.
USCCCA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM: Washington State's men's cross country team was one of 29 schools named to the 2006 United States Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Cross Country Team...teams had to have grade point average of 3.00 or higher...WSU's 2005 men's team had a 3.18 GPA...USCCA also selects an All-Academic Cross Country Team With Distinction for teams with 3.25 GPAs or higher and 20 teams were selected for 2006 recognition.
