Cal Baseball Shuts Out Santa Clara, 6-0

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Led by the strong pitching of freshmen Chris Petrini, Craig Bennigson and Matt Gorgen, California shut out visiting Santa Clara, 6-0, Wednesday at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears evened their record to 25-25 overall and the Broncos fell to 26-24.
In his first start of the season, the left-handed Petrini improved his record to 3-1, throwing a career-high 5.3 innings with three hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Lefty Benningson came in and threw the next 2.7 innings (one hit, one walk, three strikeouts), and Gorgen pitched the ninth inning (one hit, two strikeouts).
Cal scored two runs in the first inning off of Santa Clara starter Sean O'Neill (2-6, 5.3 innings, six hits, six runs, three earned runs, one strikeout) on a RBI single by sophomore catcher Travis Howell and a RBI double by sophomore designated hitter Jordan Karnofsky. The Bears added a run in the third on a solo home run by junior left fielder Chris Errecart, and three runs in the sixth on a two-run double by freshman right fielder Michael Capbaret, in his first collegiate start, and a sacrifice bunt RBI by sophomore first baseman Mike Van Winden.
Howell, Boesch and junior second baseman Brett Munster finished with two hits apiece for Cal. Bear pitching limited Santa Clara to five hits.

Cal: Errecart, solo home run in the second inning.
