No. 3 Cal State Fullerton Rallies For 7-6 Victory Over USC

May 10, 2006

FULLERTON, Calif. - Blake Davis scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Steve Martlaro in the bottom of the eighth Wednesday as the No. 3 Cal State Fullerton Titans defeated the USC Trojans, 7-6, in non conference action at Goodwin Field. The Titans scored twice in the eighth to rally for the victory.

The Titans (36-12) improved to 21-5 this season at home, but the victory may have proved costly. Closer Vinnie Pestano, who was one out away from his 14th save of the season, left the game after an 0-1 count to USC's Baron Frost due to a right elbow injury.

Ryan Paul (1-0) got the win for the Titans while Cory Arbiso earned his first save, getting Daniel Perales to ground out to first with the tying run at second. Davis was 3-for-3 for the Titans with a double and two RBI

The Trojans (24-23) came back after being down 4-0, scoring three times in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Johnny Bowden singled with two outs and moved to second on a walk to Matt Cusick. Blake Sharpe, who had three hits on the evening, singled to center and a throwing error to the plate by CSF center fielder Danny Dorn put runners at second and third. With a 1-2 count against him, Cyle Hankerd laced a two-run single to left for a 4-3 deficit. Bowden's RBI single in the sixth gave USC a go-ahead 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth with one out and Justin Turner at second, Davis singled to center. Spencer Pabst, who entered the eighth as a defensive replacement in center field for the Trojans, threw a strike to the plate as Bowden held onto the ball for the second out. Paul Koss (0-6) then walked Brett Pill to put runners at first and second. Reliever Kevin Zelenay walked Danny Dorn to load the bases before Evan McArthur came to the plate. USC went to the bullpen again as Martlaro had an 0-2 count against McArthur before uncorking the wild pitch that eventually won the game for the Titans.
