No. 8 Washington State Readies for Pac-10 Championships

What's Happening This Week: Led by the eighth-ranked varsity eight, Washington State's women's rowing team travels to Rancho Cordova, Calif. for the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, Sunday, May 14...team will race in preliminary heats at 8 a.m., and finals at 4 p.m....champion earns an automatic bid to NCAA Championships.
The Field: The Cougars will compete against the six teams in the Pac-10 as well as Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's and San Diego State in the varsity eight race...No. 8 WSU is one of six ranked teams competing this weekend...No. 2 California, No. 3 Southern California, No. 10 Washington, No. 11 UCLA and No. 16 Stanford round out the ranked teams in the field...WSU has defeated UW, Stanford and Gonzaga, and beat Oregon State twice this spring...California and USC defeated WSU by five and three seconds, respectively in the grand final of the San Diego Crew Classic.
Experience at the Pac-10 Championships: The Cougars have seventeen rowers with experience racing at the Pac-10 Championships, including six women who rowed in the 2005 varsity eight: Jody Thomas, Laura Griffin, Kasia Bloch, Robyn Stephenson, Lina Brazinskaite and Emily Collins.
Winning Ways: The WSU varsity eight has notched seven first-place finishes in eight competitions this spring...total is the most in Cougar history...varsity eight crew finished with five spring victories three times, from 1999-2001.
2005 Pac-10 Championships: Washington State's novice eight earned the Cougars' best finish at fourth...varsity four placed fifth...first and second varsity eights finished sixth.

Last Race: The Cougars varsity crews swept Oregon State at Wawawai Landing...varsity eight captured its seventh win of the spring...second varsity eight and varsity four both earned 21 second victories.
Cougars Claw Canines: WSU's varsity eight defeated UW for the first time in a spring regatta, Saturday, April 8...Cougars marked a 6:45.0 finish en route to a two-second victory over the Huskies.
