Huskies Share Lead at West Regional

The 24th-ranked Washington Huskies shot even-par 288 in the first round at the 2006 NCAA Women's Golf West Regional, tying UCLA for the lead at the 21-team event. The Huskies and Bruins hold a one stroke over Purdue (1-over 289).

UW senior Paige Mackenzie led all individuals in round one, shooting 4-under 68. The 2006 Pac-10 Champion leads teammate Amber Prange and Arkansas' Amanda McCurdy (both 3-under 69) by one stroke. Three others are tied for fourth, three strokes back at 1-under 71.

Mackenzie birdied four holes (two, six, 11 and 14) without recording a bogey. Her 4-under 68 tied her season low. Prange bogeyed holes four and six before collecting birdies on holes seven, 14, 15, 16 and 17. The junior's 3-under 69 tied her career low for a single round. In third position for the Huskies is sophomore Kim Shin, who shot 1-over 73, a season low, and placed 14th. Senior Sung Ea Lee and junior Courtney McCracken both shot 6-over 78 and are 56th headed into the second round.

The top eight teams from the West Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, May 23-26. The top two individuals who are not members of advancing teams will also be invited to the Championships.

The second round of the West Regional begins at 8:30 a.m. PT on Friday.
