Rowers Head to Pac-10 Championships
May 11, 2006
This weekend, the UCLA Women's Rowing team will travel to Rancho Cordova, Calif. to participate in two regattas. On Saturday, May 13th, the Bruins will enter a novice four in the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships (PCRC), while the V8, 2V8, V4 and N8 will take part in the Pac-10 Championships held on Sunday.
The PCRC is an open regatta for all west coast crews at the novice and masters levels. It is a good opportunity for the Bruins to enter a novice four crew which does not usually get to compete at the collegiate level. Rowing in the N4 this weekend will be Laura Garnett, Kerry Kilduff, Megan Lightfoot, Bree Hemingway and Emily Wachtel (cox).
Sunday's Pac-10 Championships promises to be full of surprises with a handful of nationally ranked teams competing for the title. The Bruins are seeded fifth out of 13 teams in the west region which also boasts top crews Cal, USC, and Stanford. Last year, UCLA finished fourth overall.
'The Pac-10 is a very deep conference with great competitors in every event,' coach Amy Fuller Kearney said. 'Our focus will be on the Bruins.'
On the line this weekend is a team bid to the NCAA Championships. Last year, UCLA's varsity eight earned an at-large bid for the first time since rowing became a varsity sport; this year the Bruins hope to include the entire team. On Tuesday, a total of 12 schools will receive team bids, with an additional four schools receiving bids for their varsity eight. Depending on the overall performances of teams around the country, UCLA could very well extend their season. If selected to compete in the NCAA's, the Bruins would travel to West Windsor, N.J. at the end of May.
