May 11, 2006

BERKELEY, Calif. - Emily Zaplatosch and Jodie Legaspi had fourth-inning RBIs to lead UCLA to a 2-0 win on Thursday afternoon at Cal's Levine-Fricke Field. With the victory, UCLA clinches the 2006 Pac-10 Championship, the program's first since 2002. UCLA pounded out seven hits on the day and Anjelica Selden struck out nine to get the win.

Following three innings of a pitchers duel between Cal's Kristina Thorson and UCLA's Anjelica Selden, the Bruins opened the top of the fourth inning with a single to left from Andrea Duran. After a successful sacrifice bunt by Pac-10 sacrifice leader Krista Colburn, Caitlin Benyi connected on a single to shallow center, giving UCLA runners on the corners with one out.

After Benyi stole second base to put both runners in scoring position, Emily Zaplatosch connected on UCLA's third single of the inning, scoring Duran and advancing Benyi to third to give UCLA a 1-0 lead. Jodie Legaspi then fouled out to deep left field, good enough for a sacrifice fly that scored Benyi and upped the Bruins lead to 2-0.

In the sixth, UCLA put two runners on with singles from Colburn and Benyi, but were unable to advance the pair. A pinch-hit single in the bottom of the seventh by Kristen Dedmon gave the Bruins a seventh hit in the contest, but UCLA still took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the circle, Selden finished with nine strikeouts, allowing just three hits en route to her 28th win and 12th shutout of the season.

The Bruins return to action on Friday evening with a 7 pm game at Stanford. The game will be televised live by CSTV.
