Nine Pac-10 Softball Players Named to CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII Team

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- Nine Pac-10 softball players have been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine District VIII Academic All-America team. In order to be nominated for Academic All-District and All-America honors, a player must be a starter or significant reserve, must have a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and must have completed at least one full academic year at her institution. The athletes are now candidates for the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot, which will be announced on Wed., May 31.
Six Conference players were honored on the first team:
California's Emily Friedman, a senior second baseman from Berkeley, Calif., is pursuing a degree in Integrative Biology and maintains a 3.60 GPA. She is fifth for the Bears in batting average (.336), and has played in 52 of Cal's 53 games this season.
UCLA's Andrea Duran, a senior third baseman from Selma, Calif., earned first team All-Pac-10 and third team Easton All-America honors in 2005. She led the Bruins to their eighth Pac-10 title this season, and is the team's top hitter with a .353 batting average. A Sociology major, Duran holds a 3.50 GPA.
Arizona State's Jen McCard is a senior infielder from La Palma, Calif., and has a 3.77 GPA in Elementary Education. In 2004 and 2005, she was a member of the Pac-10 All-Academic first team, and was a Maroon and Gold Scholar-Athlete in 2003 and 2004.
Arizona's Autumn Champion, a senior outfielder from Tustin, Calif., is pursuing a degree in Elementary Education and maintains a 3.38 GPA. A two-time Academic All-District selection, Champion is also a two-time All-Pac-10 first team selection.
Washington's Caitlin Noble is a History major with a 3.38 GPA from Sammammish, Wash. A sophomore pitcher, Noble is 12-8 this season.
Oregon State's Ta'Tyana McElroy is a junior Business Administration major from Los Angeles, Calif. The junior pitcher is a motivational speaker for RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner-cities) and is an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at OSU.
Three Conference players were named to the second team: Arizona State's Rhiannon Baca, Stanford's Catalina Morris, and Oregon State's Cambria Miranda.
