No. 9/10 Stanford Upsets Top-Ranked UCLA, 3-2

Stanford, Calif. - Junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart drove home senior outfielder Catalina Morris in the bottom of the sixth inning to help the No. 8/9 Stanford Cardinal (37-15, 9-11) upset No. 1 UCLA (43-6, 15-4) tonight, 3-2. The Cardinal took an early lead in the first inning as freshman infielder Maddy Coon collected an RBI single. Senior Lauren Lappin scored off of a sacrifice fly by freshman Missy Penna to increase the lead to two runs in the third inning. UCLA tied the game with two runs in the fourth. Morris scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the sixth inning off of a single by Rinehart.
Morris was walked on base in the bottom of the first inning and later stole second base. Coon brought Morris home with a single to left field, putting the Cardinal ahead, 1-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the second, Morris reached first base with a bunt and proceeded to steal her second base of the night. The inning closed without a Cardinal run.
In the bottom of the third inning, Lappin reached with a base hit to left field and later stole second base. Coon was walked on the next at-bat, and both runners took an additional base on a wild pitch. Penna brought Lappin home with a sacrifice fly for the Cardinal's second run of the game.
UCLA's Emily Zaplatosch opened the fourth inning with a base hit to left field and Alissa Eno entered the game to pinch run at first. Jodie Legaspi followed with another single to left field, advancing Eno to second base. Lisa Dodd then singled to shortstop, bringing home Eno for the first Bruin run of the game. Whitney Holum hit a hard single down the right line to bring home Legaspi for the game-tying run. After three and a half innings, the game was tied at 2-2.
Rinehart got on base with a slap hit to the shortstop in the bottom of the fourth inning, advancing to second base on the next at-bat, but the Cardinal hitters couldn't bring her home.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Morris slammed a double to left field to get on base. Rinehart brought Morris home for the lead with a hard single up the middle, taking second base on the throw.
Sophomore pitcher Becky McCullough struck out one batter in the top of the seventh and the Cardinal defense put away two more outs to hold on to the 3-2 victory.
In seven innings, McCullough tallied four strikeouts, walked two batters and allowed six hits. The Bruins' Lisa Dodd struck out three batters, walked four and allowed nine hits.
At the plate, Morris was 2-3 with two runs, while Rinehart was 2-4 with one RBI. Coon and Penna were both 1-2 with one RBI.
Stanford takes on the Bruins again for the final Pac-10 game of the season tomorrow at 1:00 pm. Five Cardinal seniors will be honored following the conclusion of the game.
