No. 9/10 Stanford Upsets No. 1 UCLA Again, 5-4

Stanford, Calif. - No. 9/10 Stanford Softball (43-7, 38-15) defeated top-ranked UCLA (43-7, 15-5) for the second time this weekend, 5-4. The Cardinal took the lead in the bottom of the first inning off of a two-run double by sophomore Michelle Smith. Senior Catalina Morris scored in the second inning to increase the lead to three runs. UCLA tied the game with three runs in the third, but Stanford reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly by Smith. Sophomore Tricia Aggabao scored in the fourth inning for a 5-3 lead. The Bruins brought in one run in the fifth, but the Cardinal held on for the win.
Morris was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the first inning, but was later out at second base when junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart reached on a fielder's choice. Senior infielder Lauren Lappin laid down a bunt to reach first and freshman infielder Maddy Coon was intentionally walked to load the bases. With two outs, Smith knocked a double down the left line to bring home Rinehart and Lappin for the 2-0 Cardinal lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, Morris knocked a triple to left field and later came home on an error. After two full innings, Stanford led, 3-0.
Whitney Holum was walked on base for the Bruins in the top of the third inning and Tara Henry followed with a bunt single. Alissa Eno entered the game to pinch run for Holum and Andrea Duran was walked to load the bases. Krista Colburn then reached on an error, bringing home Eno. Ashley Herrera hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Henry, and Duran came home on another error. After two and a half innings, the game was tied at 3-3.
Coon was walked in the bottom of the third inning and senior Shoney Hixson entered the game to pinch run at first base. Hixson stole second base and proceeded to third on a wild throw. Smith brought Hixson home with a sacrifice fly deep to center field, putting the Cardinal ahead, 4-3.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Aggabao bounced a base hit over the third baseman's head. Morris was walked to move Aggabao to second base. Both runners advanced on the next at-bat. Aggabao then came home on a wild pitch to put the Cardinal up, 5-3.
Henry opened the fifth inning with a single and advanced to second base on an error. Duran was walked on base, then Caitlin Benyi loaded the bases on a fielder's choice as Henry reached third on an error. Emily Zaplatosch followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Henry for the Bruins.
Stanford's defense held UCLA off in the final two innings to claim the 5-4 win.
Senior pitcher Laura Severson improves to 8-0 after seven innings in the circle, allowing just four hits. UCLA's Anjelica Selden struck out five batters, walked three and allowed five hits in six innings.
At the plate, Smith was 1-3 with three RBI and Aggabao was 2-3 with one run. Morris was also 1-1 with one run and a walk.
In three games over the weekend, freshman Missy Penna, sophomore Becky McCullough and Severson each picked up a win in the circle. Coon led the Cardinal hitters with a .400 average and one RBI, while Morris hit .375 with three runs, a double and a triple.
