May 13, 2006
Los Angeles - Junior LHP Dave Huff tossed his third complete game of the season to lead UCLA past USC, 8-3, in the second game of the three game series on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The win improves UCLA to 26-21 and 9-8 in the Pac-10 while USC falls to 25-24 and 11-9 in the Pac-10.
Huff (6-2) went the distance for the Bruins, allowing three runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and just one walk, while throwing 123 pitches, 83 of which were strikes (67 percent). Huff has tossed nine or more innings in each of his last four starts, three of which have been complete-game victories.
Senior Chris Jensen went 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run, a double, and two RBI, and freshman Cody Decker went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Senior Josh Roenicke finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored, and a RBI, and freshman Ryan Babineau went 2-for-3 with a two-run single.
USC took a 1-0 in the top of the first inning as Matt Cusick led off the game with a home run to right center field. Cusick also led off Friday's game with a home run to right field.
UCLA answered in the bottom of the first with a solo home run by Jensen to left center with a full count and two outs to tie the game at 1-1.
The Bruins loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning but could not capitalize. Babineau hit a one-out single up the middle, and freshman Jermaine Curtis was hit by a pitch to give UCLA two runners on. With two outs, Jensen hit a blooper that dropped and died on the grass behind the pitcher's mound for a base hit to load up the bases for the Bruins. Junior Tim Stewart then grounded out to USC pitcher Tommy Milone to end the threat and the inning.
The Trojans went up 2-1 in the fourth inning on a solo home run to left field by Hector Estrella.
UCLA scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead, its first lead of the series. Roenicke tied the game at 2-2 with a two-out double down the right field line to score Decker from second after he walked and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by senior Sean Smith.
The Bruins would add another run as Babineau followed with a walk on a full count when USC catcher Baron Frost became confused on the call and threw the ball away down the right field line while Babineau walked to first base to allow Roenicke to score from second. Curtis and freshman Brandon Crawford would both walk to load the bases up for UCLA with two outs, but Jensen popped up to shortstop to leave the bases juiced and end the inning.
UCLA went up 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run to left field by Decker with one out, his fourth of the season.
USC cut the Bruin lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI single to left field by Darin Vieira with one out.
The Bruins added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead over the Trojans. Roenicke led off the inning with a double to left center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Babineau. Curtis then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Roenicke from third and put UCLA up 5-3. Crawford then laid down a two-out bunt single, followed by a double to right center by Jensen to score Crawford from first and give UCLA a three-run lead.
UCLA went up 8-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-run single by Babineau with one out to score Smith from third and freshman Blair Dunlap from second.
