UCLA Upsets Pepperdine, 4-0 in NCAA Second Round

Malibu, Calif. - The UCLA women's tennis team booked a spot in the NCAA Round of 16 Saturday, posting a 4-0 upset victory over 13th-seeded Pepperdine in second round action at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. UCLA (15-6) will meet fourth-seeded Florida (23-1) next Thursday in Stanford, Calif.
UCLA, which lost to Pepperdine, 4-3 earlier this season, never let the Waves into the match Saturday. The Bruins began the day by taking the doubles point when, following an 8-4 UCLA win at court No. 1, Ashley Joelson and Tracy Lin posted an 8-3 victory over Natalie Braverman and Caroline Raba at court No. 3.
Once singles play began, the Bruins took a 2-0 lead when Lin cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Raba at court No. 3. UCLA posted another straight-set victory at court No. 5, as Ashley Joelson downed Eva Dickes, 6-2, 6-3.
Bruin sophomore Elizabeth Lumpkin clinched the match for UCLA at court No. 6, as she earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Merve Asimgil.
When play was suspended, Pepperdine's Bianca Dulgheru was leading Laura Gordon, 6-3, 5-4 at court No. 1. Riza Zalameda was up 7-5, 4-1 over Sylvia Kosakowski at court No. 2, and Alex McGoodwin was in a second set tiebreaker after winning the first set against Braverman.
