Woods' Homer Gives No. 5 Cal 1-0 Win
May 13, 2006
BERKELEY - Senior Haley Woods found the perfect way to punctuate her stellar career, hitting her 14th home run of the season on Senior Day. Thanks to Woods' solo shot and a dominating pitching performance from senior Kristina Thorson (32-8), the No. 5 California softball team took home a 1-0 win over No. 17 Washington and secured a third-place finish in the Pac-10, Saturday at Levine-Fricke Field.
The Golden Bears finish the regular season with a 44-12 overall record (12-9 in Pac-10). The Huskies fell to 32-23 and 6-15 with the loss.
The Huskies only seriously threatened once. With one out in the top of the sixth, Washington put two runners on base with back-to-back singles. Thorson then struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
With the win, Thorson moved into second on Cal's single-season wins list. With her 15 strikeouts Saturday, Thorson cleared the 1,000 strikeout mark and has 1,009 in her career.
Saturday, Thorson capped a streak of 20 scoreless innings over the past three days, dating back to the fifth inning against UCLA on Thursday. She threw a 10-inning shutout against Washington Friday.
Woods' homer put her in a tie for third in single-season home runs. She holds the second (16 in 2004) and fourth (13 in 2005) spots on that list as well. With that trip around the bases Saturday, Woods set a new Cal career record for total bases (385).
The Bears will find out their postseason fate when the 64-team NCAA regional field and the 16 regional sites are announced on ESPN News Sunday, May 14, at 12:30 p.m. In the NCAA playoffs, the 16 regional winners from May 19-21 will advance to Super Regionals (May 26-27), with the eight super regional winners advancing to the annual Women's College World Series (June 1-7) held in Oklahoma City, Okla.
