Stanford Finishes Sweep With 10-2 Win

May 14, 2006

SEATTLE - The Stanford baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Washington Sunday, using a seven-run fourth inning to ease to a 10-2 win. The win was the Cardinal's sixth in a row.

Washington fell to 32-23 overall and 9-12 in the Pac-10. The Huskies would have to win their three remaining conference games to reach .500 in conference. Stanford, which was once 3-9 in Pac-10 play, improved to 27-21 overall and 10-11 in the conference.

Stanford lefty Jeremy Bleich (4-4) earned the win, allowing two runs on eight hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out three in his fifth start of the season..

Husky starter Elliott Cribby took the loss to fall to 6-6. Over three and one-third innings, he surrendered seven runs on 10 hits.

Brent Escue and Michael Taylor each had three hits to lead the Cardinal's 15-hit attack.

Washington grabbed the game's first lead with a run in the third inning when Curt Rindal and Zach Clem knocked back-to-back, two-out doubles.

However, Stanford struck back in the top of the fourth when Taylor led off the inning with a homer to tie it at 1-1. Randy Molina followed with a single and Chris Lewis notched his second double of the day to put runners at second and third with no outs. First baseman Jason Castro then chopped a single to short, allowing one run to score, but shortstop Bradley Boyer tried to get Lewis at third and saw his throw go wild, allowing Lewis to score.

A walk and bunt single loaded the bases, and after getting a force at the plate, an infield single from Escue drove in one run and Chris Minaker sent home two more with a single, giving Stanford a 6-1 lead. A bases-loaded groundout to second from Molina led to a seventh Cardinal run before the final out was finally recorded.

While the Huskies had runners at two runners on in the fifth and sixth, but hit into inning-ending double plays, Stanford added to its lead in the seventh on a two-run homer from Castro.

In the bottom of the seventh, Husky freshman Brett Kaluza cut the Cardinal lead to 9-2 with a solo homer, his second of the season. Stanford's Ryan Seawell hit a solo homer in the ninth to close out his team's scoring.

This week, the Huskies take a break from Pac-10 Conference play. Tuesday, the Dawgs travel to Portland for a 3:00 p.m. game. Friday through Sunday, the Huskies head to Stockton, Calif., to face Pacific in a three-game series. The UW closes out the 2006 regular season May 26-28 vs. Washington State at Husky Ballpark.
