May 14, 2006

Los Angeles - Junior RHP Tyson Brummett went the distance, and the UCLA offense scored three runs in an inning four different times to cruise to a 12-1 win over rival USC on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The series-clinching win improves UCLA to 27-21 overall and 10-8 in the Pac-10 while USC drops to 25-25 and 11-10 in the Pac-10.

Brummett (6-6) earned his first-career complete game victory allowing just one run on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Brummett gave UCLA back-to-back complete game wins for the first time this season after junior Dave Huff went the distance in UCLA's 8-3 win on Saturday.

Senior Chris Jensen went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, four runs scored and three RBI, and freshman Brandon Crawford went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and some spectacular defensive plays at shortstop. Freshman Cody Decker finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a two-run home run, and two runs scored.

UCLA jumped on top of USC in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Crawford got things started with a lead off single up the middle, and Jensen scored him with a double to right center to put UCLA up 1-0. With two outs, Decker drilled a two-run home run to left center to give the Bruins a three-run advantage.

In the top of the third inning, senior Sean Smith made a spectacular diving glove flip to Crawford at shortstop to turn a 4-6-3 double play and end the inning.

The Bruins hung a three spot in the third inning to go up 6-0. UCLA loaded the bases with no outs when Smith hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Jensen from third. With two outs, senior Josh Roenicke drilled a two-run double to right field to score senior Brett McMillan and Decker to give UCLA a six run edge.

USC got on the board in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI ground out to third by Baron Frost.

UCLA scored three more runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-1 lead. Jensen hit a RBI single through the right side to score freshman Jermaine Curtis to give UCLA a 7-1 lead. Smith smacked a RBI double to left center with two outs to score Jensen, and freshman Blair Dunlap followed with a base hit through the left side to pick up Smith and give the Bruins an eight-run lead.

The Bruins posted three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 12-1 lead over USC. Jensen hit a RBI single through the right side, and McMillan drilled a two-run double down the right field line to give UCLA three runs for the third-consecutive inning and the fourth time in the game.

UCLA defeated USC on Sunday to win its fifth-consecutive home series, a first for the Bruins since 1997.

UCLA will next play on Tuesday, May 16 in a non-conference game at UC Irvine at 6 p.m.
