UCLA Wins Pac-10 Series, 12-1, Over USC
May 14, 2006
LOS ANGELES - Right fielder Chris Jensen went 4-for-4 with three RBI while Tyson Brummett threw a complete-game, six-hitter Sunday as the UCLA Bruins defeated the USC Trojans, 12-1, in Pac-10 Conference action.
UCLA improved to 27-21 on the season, 10-8 in Pac-10 play after winning the series, two games to one. USC is now 25-25 overall, 11-10 in conference.
Brummett (6-6) did not allow a walk and struck out five for the win. Trojan starting pitcher Shawn Olsen (4-5) lasted just one inning, allowing three runs on three hits. USC reliever John Dunn threw two perfect innings with four strikeouts.
In the bottom of the first, Jensen laced an RBI double to center to score Brandon Crawford from second. After Brett McMillan flied out to center, designated hitter Cody Decker hammered his second home run in as many days with a two-run shot to left center for a 3-0 UCLA lead.
With runners at first and second on in the top of the third with one out, Matt Cusick hit a sharp ground ball to second. UCLA's Sean Smith smothered the ball and threw it to second off his glove hand for the spectacular 4-6-3 double play.
The Bruins registered three-run innings in the third, fourth and fifth to put the game away. The Trojans' lone run came in the fourth on an RBI groundout by designated hitter Baron Frost.
USC travels to Pepperdine on Tuesday (May 16) for a 3 p.m. game that will be broadcast live on ESPN360.com. The Trojans then travel to Wichita State for a non conference series, Friday-Sunday (May 19-21). All four games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
